21,000 Leave City ER's Without Seeing MD
Close to 21,000 people left eight Winnipeg hospital emergency rooms over a recent one-year period without seeing a doctor, according to information obtained by the Manitoba Conservatives.
The figure included 1,140 visits to the ER at the Children’s Hospital.
Outside the legislature, Conservative Leader Hugh McFadyen called the 20,916 fruitless visits a "disconcertingly high" number. The number covered the period from April 2010 to March 2011.
Health Minister Theresa Oswald said she’s concerned by the numbers, and the government is taking several steps to improve Manitoba’s access to doctors.
"We continue to be concerned about why people are going to emergency rooms when perhaps they don’t need to and what are the other options that would really work for them," Oswald said.
Oswald said it’s clear Manitobans need more health-care options.
