Omega-3 Fatty Acids Beneficial for Breast Cancer Prevention; Anti-inflammatory PDF Print E-mail

Eating fatty fish is already associated with better heart health, but fish oil supplements also may be beneficial when it comes to breast cancer.

A study published in the July 2010 issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention found that post-menopausal women who take fish oil supplements may reduce their risk of invasive ductal breast cancer, the most common type by 32 percent.

"Fish oil supplements contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, but other studies examining the link between consuming fish or omega-3 fatty acids and breast cancer risk have produced inconsistent results," says Dr. Swistel.  "It isn’t clear what might underpin any benefits, but it could have something to do with the anti-inflammatory properties of fish oil."
